This is the first part of the biography of Maurice 'Biff' Fricker one of the central characters found time and again throughout this series. It is appended with The Armentierres Incident, and concluded in Part 2.  This episode covers briefly Biff's childhood through to his training in the RASC Water Transport service and first foreign deployment.

Biff Fricker followed his father into the RASC which by then when was their ‘family corps’. He was to do very well in the corps and travel widely. This first part covers an introduction to his early life and then early career and training as a boy soldier. The episode is read from his extensive memoirs that were written together with his son and includes contributions from his brother Mick and his son Dave, who voices the parts written in Biff’s own words.
